A Little Bit About Scotland

Scotland was incorporated in May of 1857; taken from Windham. The first settler to inhabit Scotland was Issac Magoon. In 1700 he purchased 1,950 acres of land from then Windham and thus began Scotland’s History. The town named Scotland as a way of commemorating his ancestral home.
Agriculture is the principal industry of this small town of approximately 1,600. The town covers 18.7 miles and still maintains the Town Meeting as a form of Government. Scotland has a Board of Selectmen, consisting of Clark Stearns, First Selectman, Stephanie Abraham, Selectman, and Joseph C. Savino, Selectman.
The town also has historic places. The
Governor Samuel Huntington House is located in the center of town at 36 Huntington Road (RTE. 14just west of RTE. 97 intersection). The parents of Samuel Huntington first purchased the house in the early 1700’s. In July of 1731, Samuel Huntington was born. He was one of 10 children. In the mid 1750’s, he started his own law practice in Windham. Over the next few years he went on to make a name for himself in the political arena, by becoming the Chief Executive Officer of the confederated states, making him the first president of the United States. Another attraction is the Nathan Fuller House, located at 147 Plains Road. This is a charming little Bed and Breakfast owned and operated by Bruce and Georgia Stauffer. Another feature that is very popular is the annual Scotland Highland Festival. This popular event held on the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend in October, brings people from all over. For more information, you can contact the Town Hall in Scotland at 860-423-9634.
Through out the year Scotland has ongoing activities that are all fun for the family. Among some of the events is the annual Chili Challenge, usually held in the summer, along with various dances held throughout the year at the Grange located at 39 Devotion Road.
The Town of Scotland is a close knit community that has an Elementary School, Library, and, a new Fire Safety Complex and Community Center. The Community Center is available for rental for weddings and other events throughout the year. For information on renting the center, call 860-465-3126.
